AT&T Rolls out A-GPS, Adds Navigation Applications

AT&T has deployed assisted-GPS technology (A-GPS) on its network to add location-based services (LBS) on its cell phones, the company said today. It also said it will launch two navigation applications in the coming weeks, MapQuest Navigator and AAA Mobile navigator, underscoring its focus on GPS services.
AAA Mobile navigator will offer audible turn-by-turn directions as well as AAA TourBook travel guide information such as Diamond Ratings for restaurants and lodgings, gas prices, movie reviews and show times. MapQuest Navigator will give turn-by-turn, voice-guided driving and walking directions, 3D moving maps, and access to 16 million points of interest from MapQuest's database. Users can get real-time traffic alerts, gas prices, gas station locations and AOL's City's Best restaurant and venue ratings.

Plans to launch a location-enabled social networking service and a family-oriented service with privacy controls are underway. "Using a mobile phone for navigation is convenient because it eliminates the need for consumers to buy or carry yet another gadget," said Mark Collins, Vice President of AT&T. "Traditional navigation devices can be hard to transport, while a mobile phone is always on hand."

Unlike GPS technology which searches satellites for latitude and longitude coordinates, A-GPS triangulates locations of cell phone customers using nearby cell sites.

Nokia Cuts Phone Prices, Pressuring Rivals

Finnish cell phone maker Nokia cut prices for many of its handsets in July, putting further pressure on its rivals' already thin profits. Nokia made the steepest price reductions of up to 10 percent for selected music and media phones, while it made smaller cuts across the portfolio. The sharpest falls were in the average retail price of the 5310 and 5610 music phones and the multimedia N81 8GB. The price cuts follow Nokia's launch of its Supernova phone range - aggressively priced products with integrated music players, challenging Sony Ericsson's Walkman portfolio.

Manufacturers are facing an increasingly intense battle for market share as demand for pricey phones has started to slow in the U.S. and Europe, where economies are under pressure from the global credit crunch.

The price cuts from Nokia, which controls 40 percent of the cell phone market, will put further pressure on its smaller rivals like Sony Ericsson, which has focused on music and camera phones. Sony Ericsson made practically no money in the April-June quarter, and said it would cut 2,000 jobs as it forecast the remainder of 2008 would also be tough.

Struggling Motorola has made losses since its flagship RAZR phone lost appeal among consumers. Nokia increased its market share to 41 percent in the second quarter, helped by surging demand in emerging markets.

HTC P3400i PDA phone targets entry-level smartphone users

Recently, HTC revealed a new PDA phone - P3400i. The device runs Windows Mobile 6 and only a year ago would be worth enough talking about. Now, once the Diamond has been revealed, I'm having a problem finding any good words to describe it. To be fair, the P3400i is completely different beast than the Diamond. It targets entry-level smartphone users and as such it provides a solid value for the money.

The so called "affordable business PDA" sports a 2.8-inch touchscreen, quad-band GSM/GPRS radio, 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth connectivity support. An array of Microsoft software is pre-installed to help users be more productive, and media playback capabilities ensure that the P3400i owners will also be/stay entertained while on-the-go.

The HTC P3400i should be available at the end of May at all authorized resellers at a suggested retail price of $488.

Nokia will allow N-Gage games to be used on multiple devices

Well, talk about nipping controversy in the bud. Just a couple days after Nokia enthusiasts started to get all riled up over having their Nokia N-Gage games locked to a single handset, Nokia has up and announced that they'll make sure that N-Gage games can be transferred between multiple handsets.

Nokia previously said that N-Gage titles are tied to the handset through which they were purchased:

“N-Gage activation codes only work on the device where they were first activated. As with any digital media there is a potential risk of piracy and this policy is one of the ways Nokia is dealing with piracy and ensuring partners receive their rightful revenues from its platform. If users need to repair their device, the activation codes will be reissued. Also, if you purchase a new N-Gage compatible device, you will need to purchase your games again.”

But, with Nokia fans up in arms over being forced to re-buy games for new handsets, Nokia has flipped an about face and backpedaled on their previous statement. The games can be transferred through customer service in the near-term, but rest assured that Nokia is working on a long-term solution to make sure that N-Gage customers can play their purchased game titles on multiple mobile phones.

Here's what Nokia has to say about transferring N-Gage games:

"We have noticed a number of media stories about N-Gage game transfers and wanted to clarify the issue. Due to copy protection, N-Gage games, like most mobile games, are linked to one device. As the value of content increases, a robust copy protection mechanism is essential as it makes it possible for the games industry to invest in N-Gage content.

We acknowledge our customers' concerns and have been working on a solution that would allow people to transfer purchased N-Gage games to a new Nokia device. We are working with our Nokia Care Centers with an intermediate solution to enable the licensed transfers of games until a final solution is ready to be deployed.

We apologise for the confusion around this issue and look forward to delivering an appropriate solution to transfer purchased N-Gage games to new Nokia devices."

It's not clear when, exactly, Nokia will be allowing users to transfer their games, but it shouldn't take too long.

Christian Dior debuts $5,000 mobile phone - Dior cellphone aims at luxury market

Christian Dior has been rumored to be working on a mobile phone for some time, and following on recent speculation the Christian Dior-branded handset could make its debut soon, the Dior phone has gone live. With a $5,000 price tag, we can't imagine anyone outside the comfortable walls of high society will be grabbing a Dior phone anytime soon.

But, for those of you living the Gossip Girl lifestyle, Dior will happily hand over a cellphone to complement your undoubtedly stylish threads. Made by ModeLabs, the $5,000 Dior cellphone sports a touchscreen display and camera. But, more interestingly Dior has included something called "My Dior" with their new handset. The "My Dior" is essentially a USB flash drive-sized mini-cellphone/remote that is meant to be clipped to the outside of a purse. The idea is to make answering phone calls simple and hassle-free using "My Dior," with the main handset standing by to handle more complicated phone-related duties - like SMS text messaging and taking pictures.

Hey, if $5,000 doesn't faze your petty cash fund, you might want to hit up Dior and grab your own Dior phone. You know your self-esteem will appreciate it…

Nokia 6600 Slide - smooth slider phone

One of the smallest Nokia handsets to date, the Nokia 6600 Slide sits nicely in the hand and smoothly glides open to reveal a well spaced alpha-numeric keypad. The appearance of the slide version of the Nokia 6600 with its glossy look, high quality steel covers and aluminium centre key conveys understated elegance and visual simplicity.

The 6600 Slide has a well balanced feature set matched with the intuitive Nokia user interface. Tapping on the 6600 twice can indicate the time, puts the mobile phone into snooze mode after the alarm has sounded, silences alerts and can even reject incoming calls. The phone includes a music player, supporting many formats including MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+ and WMA. Also included is a stereo FM radio.

The Nokia 6600 Slide has a 3.2 megapixel camera, equipping the phone to take high quality pictures, ready to be shared with friends via MMS, email, or online through social networking sites or on your blog. The screen on the phone is an impressive 2.2 inch QVGA supporting up to 16 million colours.

The Nokia 6600 supports Nokia Maps, turning the phone into a mobile Sat Nav device when used with a Bluetooth GPS module.

iPhone Vista Perfection theme rocks, some will hate it

This is a tricky one. I'm sure many of the iPhone owners won't even consider getting something with "Vista" word on their beloved device, like ever. However, I must say they should consider this beautiful theme…

VistaPerfection is a Summerboard compatible theme, created by Spec Works. Features include over 90 icons, boot and restore images, sliders and vista login/logoff (unlock/lock). The screenshot on the left is there to help you realize just how cool this is. Yeah, you may hate the Windows logo and I can understand that, but the icons are gorgeous.

The problem, though, at least for those interested to try out the theme, is that at the moment it isn't available via Installer.app. Rather, you'll have to manually go through series of steps in order to make your iPhone feel the power of Vista (start hating me here, please). If you're that confident in your abilities to do so, or just want to give it shot, hop over to ModMyiPhone forums for detailed instructions. Good luck!

Sony Ericsson announce the T303 mobile

Sony Ericsson has announced their latest handset release, the T303. We can know a little about this handset from the detail we posted here other day. Although the T Series is not listed we can determine that the 303 is the first model of the series, fairly low end spec, slider format. And that’s exactly how the T303 pans out.

The Sony Ericsson T303 is tiny, measuring in at just 83 x 47 x 14.7 mm and weighing in at 93g. It incorporates a 1.3 megapixel camera, making it the ideal phone for a night out where you will want some fun snaps but nothing serious. In fact, Sony Ericsson are marketing the phone as something you will take with you when you can’t take everything.

The T303 is also enabled with an FM radio, so you can keep up to date with all the latest news and your favourite radio station while on the move. There is also space in the tiny handset for an MP3 Player and the excellent Track ID service. For those that have not used Track ID, it allows you to record a snippet of a song from the radio or similar and send that to the Sony Ericsson database online. Within seconds the song will be tagged and information sent back to the phone, including song title, artist name and album.

The Sony Ericsson T303 will release in two colour variants, Shimmering Silver and Shadow Black. Keep an eye on our Mobile Phones Coming Soon page for more details as we get them.

Nokia 3600 Slide - noise cancelling mobile phone

The Nokia 3600 Slide offers a combination of tasteful colours, materials and tactile finishes, with a full range of the latest features. The use of soft ceramic paint and metal combined with high gloss surfaces and gradated colours make the 3600 stand out from the crowd. Beautiful to see and beautiful to touch the Nokia 3600 is equally beautiful to hear thanks to the inclusion of background noise cancellation, the first Nokia handset to support this feature.

The Nokia 3600 has a built in music player, and with the option to have up to 4GB of storage space with the addition of a micro SD memory card, meaning you will be able to store up to 3,000 songs with this mobile phone. The 3600 feels small in the hand, but is not small on features, including such top end options as a 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus, and a 2 LED flash, similar to that which will be used on the N96. This allows for the light to also be used when video recording. The Nokia 3600 also includes a TV-out option, making the sharing of photos and videos quick and easy.

As a utility service, I think GPS/Sat Nav is great - however, I believe, as do many others in the industy, that the real power of it is harnessed when it is twinned with other mobile-unique services to create service-mashups such as geotagging photos (and other media).

Samsung F400 music mobile

The focus of the Samsung F400 is music. First appearances suggest nothing special about this mp3 music phone, but underneath the standard looking exterior is a powerful music player.

The F400 has a two way slide action, similar to that made popular by the Nokia N95 and N95 8GB. Sliding the phone up reveals a 15 key alpha numeric keypad. Slide the phone down to reveal loudspeakers for the music player. The loudspeakers on the Samsung f400 are made using Bang & Olufsen ICEpower technology. Consequently the sound output from these speakers is of the highest quality, and much better than the usual tinny sound you get from many phone speakers.

The music player itself recognises many music formats; as well as MP3 there is support for AAC, eAAC and WMA formats. Another feature for music lovers to enjoy is the inclusion of a music recognition feature. Simply record a snippet of song on the phone and it will be able to give you full track details, including artist name, song and album details. With support for Bluetooth 2.0 you will be able to listen to your favourite songs wirelessly with a compatible Bluetooth headset. With the inclusion of an FM radio you will never be without the latest music tracks on your phone.

The F400 from Samsung is about more than just music, though. It includes a 3.0 megapixel camera, with video recording capability. Memory on the phone is 24MB, but this can easily be expanded with the addition of a micro SD memory card, offering plenty of space for songs and pictures.

Another feature is the inclusion of HSDPA mobile broadband, offering high speed connectivity for data transfers. HSDPA builds upon the speeds offered by 3G networks, and offers a noticeable difference to the end user. Browsing the web and reading email can now be achieved quickly and simply. The F400 has a good sized QVGA resolution screen, which renders websites clearly and brightly.

The Samsung F400 is due for launch soon. If you wish to register your interest in this handset, please register here and we will email you when we have a confirmed release date.

Asus M930 Review

The Asus M930 is one chunky smartphone, but there is a good reason for its size and weight. From first glance, it looks like an old-fashioned mobile phone. It is large in the pocket and the hand, and the front fascia has a screen and number pad, just like other bar phones. However, turn it sideways and lift a hinge, and it opens up clamshell style to reveal a second inner screen and a full keyboard − think of Nokia’s very popular E90 and you’ll get the idea.

The internal screen looks lost in its wide surroundings, and because it only manages 240x400 pixels, it doesn’t give you a great deal more viewing area than you’d get from an ordinary Windows Mobile Professional smartphone.

The keyboard could be a little wider, but it’s on a par with what you’d expect from other Windows Mobile devices, such as the E-TEN range. There is even space for a navigation button, and Call and End keys.

i-mate Ultimate 8502 Review

Look and Feel

It’s not the prettiest smartphone we have ever seen, but the offset mini joystick on the front fascia does give it an air of individuality.

Ease of Use

The QWERTY keyboard is tiny, but its keys are nicely raised from each other so they are reasonably easy to hit.

Features

There is no GPS, but it does have HSDPA and Wi-Fi, and you can send the screen’s contents to a TV or projector via a provided cable.

Performance

There were no performance issues noticed during testing. It is easy to navigate using a combination of mini joystick, side-mounted scroll-wheel and touch-screen.

Battery Life

The battery life is quite strong for a Windows Mobile Professional device. You should get a couple of days between charges unless you thrash the Wi-Fi and 3G.

Samsung launches "Soul" in Europe

Samsung Electronics on Sunday announced the launch of the previously announced 'Soul' mobile phone, calling it the company's flagship product in the first half 2008. Beginning later this month (and next), the "Soul" will be available in France, UK, and Germany through major European mobile operators and in most of GSM supporting open markets. The tri-band phone features a 5-megapixel camera with a 4x digital zoom, face detection, image stabilizer and Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) as well as 7.2Mbps HSDPA data access for advanced 3G network support. Soul is available in three different colors: 'Sterling Steel,' 'Soul Gray' and 'Platinum Silver" for €400.

Showcased in Barcelona last February, Samsung says it named ‘Soul’ to honor the completion of its exclusive ‘Ultra Edition’ series with a full metal body and a premium finish and 12.9mm-thin form factor.

The slim, lightweight and stylish mobile phone offers a sleek combination of "highly styled design" and functionality, including advanced usability features that adapt to the user depending on the application: the navigation indicators on the keypad of the phone change according to the user’s needs, enabling simpler navigation of the menus simple, intuitive and direct, Samsung claims.

"The navigation panel’s icons change according to function. For example, when in music mode, music related icons will light up on the navigation indicators," the company said in a statement. "When in camera mode, camera related icons such as zoom and brightness icons will appear."

The manufacturer said a 'Viewty-style' phone, with 'possibly more megapixels' was in the pipeline and could launch around October this year, but stressed that an exact launch date was yet to be confirmed.

LG revealed its plans when talking to Mobile about its product roadmap for the rest of the year.

In addition to the LG K750 Black Label handset, which is set to be unveiled next week, LG said there would be a music phone launching 'around July', an imaging phone 'like the Viewty' around October and an 'design/fashion led phone' planned for November.

Meanwhile, the LG KF700 is already on sale.

LG T80: Mobile Freeview for Nordic neighbours

It's a popular opinion at Crave that South Korean company LG Electronics has made significant advances in its game over the last few years. We find its mobile phones to be as titillating as Kate Nash, and its MP3 players, while not ground-breaking, are at least stylish and touch-sensitive, also like Ms Nash. Rowr.

Lucky for our Nordic neighbours, then, that LG's giving them a new model of MP3 player to enjoy. It's called the T80 and among the what-we-expected-in-2007 -not-2008 specifications, it supports DVB-T -- the digital TV technology that Freeview is built upon. "You mean I can get Dave on my MP3 player?" Well, yes and no... but mostly no.

Why? It's probably not going to come to the UK, despite LG needing to give us an update to last year's FM37. Come on, it's no big deal. Freeview on the move would be rubbish. We've seen it implemented in a mobile phone and it was awful.

TV aside, the T80 is an okay MP3 player, with MP3, WMA, OGG and WAV support, MPEG-4 video, a full 40 hours of audio battery life and a 400x240-pixel touch-sensitive display. With only 4GB of non-expandable internal memory and just two hours of DVB-T battery life, we don't feel like we're missing this year's most crucial product.

If you're itching for your quirky usage of TV technology fix, you can see people with televisions for heads in Encoded this week. -Nate Lanxon

Samsung miCoach Review

Look and feel

The Samsung miCoach is a lightweight slider phone with a robust plastic casing and a patterned grip-finish on the rear casing and around the joypad, designed to assist grips as you build up a sweat.

At 80g and similar in size to an iPod Mini, the phone is a good weight and shape to be held comfortably while you’re running and also tucks comfortably into one of those little Velcro arm straps. A volume control on the right-hand side of the phone is similarly grip friendly and the important key functions are clearly signposted with relevant icons like a runner and a music symbol.

All in all, the phone is as attractive as it needs to be. The Samsung branding is clear yet relatively subtle, and the phone feels sturdy enough to survive being dropped as you take the steps of your local municipal building two at a time as you reach the crescendo of your workout.

Features

Although many of the features, like the camera and data speeds are bog standard, the phone’s fitness function is first rate.

Samsung’s miCoach can be set to monitor a workout that suits your needs, whether you’re a serious athlete or a part-time jogger. And not only do you get running commentary on the progress of your workout at the press of a button, you can even choose the type of voice that delivers your stats. On top of that, the excellent music player is beautifully integrated with the phone’s fitness function.

Ease of use

With two well signposted keys providing instant access to the Workout and Music functions and an easy icon-based main menu, the miCoach is an easy phone to get around.

It’s also very easy to access and control the fitness and music functions while you’re mid-run with single or double key presses usually doing the trick.

Performance

Putting the phone’s average camera and web browsing abilities to one side, the Samsung miCoach is an excellent fitness-tracking tool.

Everything about the phone just works. It’s simple to set up and, once you’ve done so, provides very accurate data. The music player is great too and integrates beautifully with the phone’s fitness function.

Battery life

Although the miCoach is designed to offer low battery consumption, the battery is quite weak with only 150 minutes’ talktime and 250 minutes’ standby. Compared to the 500+ minutes that most Sony Ericsson phones offer, this is a little disappointing.

Tpad Launches Mobile VoIP on Nokia WiFi Mobiles

Tpad today announced the availability of a free SMS text service that will automatically setup a WiFi enabled mass-market mobile phone that will bring free or ultra low cost mobile VoIP calls to millions.

The SMS text service is currently configured for Nokia's latest E and N series phones and will be constantly updated when leading mobile phone producers such as Samsung and Motorola release their brand new WiFi phones later this year.

Mobile calls between Tpad users are free worldwide if the calls are routed over their WiFi Connection. All other PSTN calls from the user's WiFi mobile to any other landline or mobile in the world will be charged at the usual low Tpad VoIP rates.

This SMS text service has been designed to remove the need for complicated set up procedures. At Tpad, set up is easy and fast, customers simply create a free mobile account and then they will automatically receive a free SMS text that will configure their phone's SIP settings with Tpad.

Tpad integrates seamlessly with the phone using the existing address book, so there's no need to retype your contacts. Once set up to use a WiFi hotspot, the mobile connects automatically next time the phone is in range.

Samsung's Belle phone comes with matching nail polish

Apart from stylish features, graphics, and color changes, phone makers have included plenty of other gimmicky functions in order to attract the fairer sex. In case you missed it, there are plenty of novelty phones out there with ovulation calendars, rape alarms, recipe databases, and weight management functions, but the latest trend on the radar is matching your nail polish to your phone.

Mobileburn.com says that in order to find the matching shade for the exclusive G600 Belle mobile, Samsung partnered with Nails Inc. in the UK who will be introducing the complimentary purple lacquer, along with two other bottles. Compared to the other genius female-centric features, nail polish will at least come in handy in my book, so I won't complain as long as they don't expect me to pay extra for it.

Apart from the matching nail polish token, the slider phone itself isn't so bad either. It includes a 5-megapixel camera, music player, supports microSD cards, and has a large display to surf the Web. Samsung's G600 Belle will be available exclusively through Phones 4u in the UK starting next month.

Ladies, do you think matching your nail polish with your cell phone will be a hit or a miss?

This new version of the G600 is cloaked in a sleek burgundy colour and the manufacturer is now throwing in 3 bottles of nail polish in the box, including one that matches the G600 Belle's color. iPhone helps spread Safari

Apple's Safari browser, which runs on the iPhone and iPod Touch, is the second most popular mobile browser in the UK, research has found.

According to the web analytics firm Statcounter, the iPhone has three times the internet browser market share of its nearest rival BlackBerry in the UK, but still lags behind Nokia.

"The iPhone is more than living up to its claims of being a user-friendly internet browser, unlike many other mobile phones," said Aodhan Cullen, head of StatCounter.

"The iPhone is already the number one mobile browser in the US and number two globally despite having a significantly lower market share of overall phone sales," Cullen added.

The iPhone was released in the UK last November. Mobile phone operator O2 has said that it is the fastest-selling device it has ever launched in the UK.

Personal Navigation with the Nokia 6210 Navigator

Nokia have seemingly increased the pace of mobile phone innovation with the announcement of the Nokia 6210 Navigator at the MWC 2008. The 6210 Navigator is similar in features to the 6120 Navigator, coming with HSDPA and aGPS as standard.

However, what the 6210 adds to the mix is a built-in compass, which acts to rotate the map according to the direction in which you're pointing. In other words, no more having to work out which way down a street you're walking - the map will always point in your direction no matter where you stand. Perfect for women, I understand.

Samsung SPH-M520 Review

Surprise won’t even begin to describe costumer’s feelings when they’ll see the new Samsung SPH-M520 for the very first time. A lot of us have been asking for something innovative, something different, from one of the world’s leading manufacturer of mobile phones - but they failed to do it with this one. Although the SPH-M520 remained true to Samsung’s slim slider phone’s, it won’t overly impress users already influenced by devices such as the iPhone or RIM’s Blackberries.

Having said that, I’d like to soften my criticism a little by saying that the phone in itself isn’t really that bad. As with other mobile devices , it has it’s good points that some users will be comfortable with.

Starting of with its design, the SPH-M520 remains true to Samsung’s popular form. But I’m just wondering, when will Samsung try something new? A candy-bar type phone would be a breath of fresh air when we are talking about all the slim sliders that Samsung has produced.

At 4.01 inches by 2.04 inches by 0.5 inch and 2.75 ounces the SPH-M520 is neither too big nor too small; it slips easily into a pocket and it won’t weigh you down. The slider mechanism is sturdy enough, but also sensitive enough to allow users to pen and close the phone with one hand.

The SPH-M520’s 262,000-color display measures a generous 2.1 inches (176×220 pixels). Like many Samsung displays, it’s bright and colorful and shows just about everything well. You can change the brightness, the backlighting time, and the dialing font size and color.

Samsung added a new layer to the standby screen. Now, you can find shortcut icons to seven functions that is, in my opinion, very convenient. You can cycle though the options while pressing the navigation toggle and make your selection with the OK key. It’s a convenient arrangement but you can turn it off and use the traditional toggle shortcuts instead.

Another positive aspect to the SPH-M520 is its well-designed navigation controls. It’s much better than what we see in most of today’s slider phones. The square toggle is large and is raised above the surface of the SPH-M520 and gives you no problem thumbing through the menus and selecting options using the tactile OK button.

The phone’s features basically contains the standard 500-contact phone book with room in each entry for five phone numbers, an e-mail address, a Web address, a nickname, and notes. You can save contacts to groups and pair them with a photo and one of 19 (72-chord) polyphonic ringtones for caller ID.

Other essentials include a vibrate mode, text and multimedia messaging, a file manager, a speakerphone, a calendar, a scheduler, a voice recorder, an alarm clock, a memo pad, a calculator, a countdown timer, a task list and a world clock. You’ll also find stereo Bluetooth, USB mass storage, GPS support with Telenav access, voice dialing and commands, wireless backup for your contacts, modem capability, e-mail and instant messaging and PC syncing. The SPH-M520 also offers audible caller ID that will route through to a Bluetooth headset.

The SPH-M520 also has a 1.3-megapixel camera that takes pictures in four resolutions - 1.3-megapixel, high, medium, and low. Other options include a self timer, five fun frames, five color tones, brightness and white balance controls, a night mode, a 2x zoom and four shutter sounds. It can also act as a camcorder and shoots clips with sound and a set of editing options similar to the still camera. After doing so, you can save your work in its memory. The SPH-M520’s internal memory, however, is small at 16MB, but you can use the microSD card slot for more storage.
